Our Beautiful Encounter with Giant Pandas in That Summer

In August 2013, on invitation of Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation, we came thousands of miles away to the Land of Abundance for exchange and discussing. I will never forget this meaningful tour of giant panda hometown…the cute, charming, black and white, edacious, tameless, endangered and national treasure pandas imprinted in my mind were major achievements of this visit and constituted grounds for myself being a supporter of giant panda breeding protection in the future.

Held by the secretary-general of Chengdu Giant Panda Public Education Seminar Ms. Yan Hong, the research and visitation invited Ms. Hou Rong, the director of Research Center of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, to make a general report on the field investigation result of giant panda breeding research from perspective of academic and scientific practices. It showed the humanistic charm of Chengdu and demonstrated the friendship between Taiwan and mainland on caring and protecting giant panda. Meanwhile, the Seminar also invited Ms. Xu Ping, the head of Popular Science Education Department, to give a report on environmental conservation and public ecological education and practices. With her academic background of master on overseas ecotourism study, Ms. Xu Ping participated in the curriculum planning practices of Chengdu giant panda public ecological education, which inspired me and made me have a completely new positive understanding of the narratives and practices of the environment educational ecology in Chengdu – the hometown of giant panda. Although her report is made in different approaches with Environmental Education in Taiwan made by schoolmaster Lin Jiumu, the representative of Taiwan, they led to equally satisfactory results and showed the harmonious education concept in mainland and Taiwan.

What makes me really excited was my experience in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and what amazed me greatly was the Panda Valley in Dujiangyan – the Wild-release Center in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Wild-release Transition Station in Yexi Valley, which occupies an area of thousands of Mu. Only after you go close to the giant panda and situate in the mountain forest where giant pandas are, can you deeply understand and narrate the touching mood related to giant panda.

From the ignorance before the visitation, to the impressive amazement during visitation, and then to the affection after visitation, this journey of Chengdu Panda Lecture made great significance and happiness beyond expression in aspect of promoting the research result of giant panda public conservation and education between mainland and Taiwan. After the visitation, every time I thought about the experiences in Chengdu, I feel happy that this journey rectified my personal prejudice and mistake about the living world of giant panda and it also perfectly combined my image as educator and the reality of ecological education of giant panda. Moreover, Panda Lecture is just the key platform which deeply studies the education in mainland and expands the communication between study and human in both mainland and Taiwan. Encounter with Giant Panda: Straightforward Thanks – since that visitation, I have been always thinking about that summer, when we encounter with Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation. Here, we sincerely hop that Panda Lecture will continuously expand the quality of public education and become one vital platform for both mainland and Taiwan to jointly care about national treasure giant panda, composing one perpetual and wonderful living blueprint for these mysterious and charming lives in this Divine Land – China.
