Giant Panda Longlong’s Transformation
Date: 2016-10-10

On April 17, 2012, a dying wild giant panda was spotted in Sichuan Hongkou National Nature Reserve. Shortly, the staff from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was informed and reached the spot. After preliminary physical examination at the aid station, the panda was detected to be male, about 20 years old, extremely malnourished, wizened, hair ruffled and dull, severely dehydrated, skin inelastic, vascular collapsed, with ascetic fluid in its abdominal cavity, right fore hand fractured from wrist (the break part has closed up), two 20 cm long old scratches on its chest, multiple old scars on the body and incisor worn away seriously.

After simple on-site treatment, the panda was transported to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for further resuscitation and treatment. He was named Longlong by the staff in the research base, because he came from Longxi Hongkou. In the base, Longlong was detected to have severe pancreatitis, myocarditis, hepatic injury and ticks and ascaris parasitized inside and outside the body by physiological and biochemical examinations of blood, stool, urine and ascites as well as abdominal ultrasound examination. Multiple organs and systems were prostrated because of severe malnourishment (he only weighed 62 kg while normally adult male giant panda shall be at least 110 kg).

After resuscitation for six days and nights, Longlong, who hadn’t drunk any water and even shocked and stopped breathing for many times, started to take food. After being nursed for two years, Longlong weighs 106 kg now, and his sunken cheeks were transformed to a round face. What a great change! Now he is spending his remaining years in comfort in the base. We wish him good health and a long life. Let’s see some pictures of Longlong!
